Hybrid Chestnut limbs with chestnutsHybrid Chestnut Tree

Chestnuts were once a dominat tree and a major food source for wildlife in the Eastern U.S. Unfortunately, in the early 1900s a fungus that caused chestnut blight was accidentally introduced from Asia. By 1950, this blight had infected and killed nearly all of the American Chestnut trees in the Eastern U.S. Our hybrid Chestnuts are a cross between surviving American Chestnuts and Chinese Chestnuts. They are resistant to the blight, fast growing, and can begin producing chestnuts at 3 to 5 years of age. The Chestnuts range from 3/4 to 1-1/2 inch in size and drop from late September to early November depending on location.

Chestnuts will grow in variety of soils and can survive in moist but not wet sites. However, they do best in locations with slightly acidic to neutral, sandy loam soils that are well drained and receive full sunlight.
