Willow Oak (Quercus phellos)

Willow oak limb with acornsWillow oakWillow oak acorns

Willow oaks are a moderately fast growing red oak that typically begin to produce acorns at about 20 years of age. In excellent locations, they can begin producing acorns at younger ages. Willow oaks produce heavy crops of acorns about 1/2 inch in size every year. The acorns drop in October and November and are consumed by deer, turkey, squirrels, ducks, and many other wildlife species. Fall leaf color varies from yellow to russet.

Willow oaks will grow in a variety of soils, but prefer deep, acidic soils that are moist. Willow oaks will tolerate occasional flooding and even some drought. For best results, these trees should be planted in areas with good soil that receive full sunlight.
