Bald Cypress (Taxodium distichum)

Bald Cypress SaplingsBald Cypress Saplings 2

Bald Cypress are a long-lived tree common in swampy lowland areas throughout the southeast and the Atlantic Coastal Plain. Their iconic knees grow from the roots and assist the tree in its collection of oxygen from the air when the area is flooded. Bald Cypress have adapted to survive in swampy locations, but they will also grow on dry sites. During the summer the needlelike leaves of the Bald Cypress are dark green. In the fall the leaves change to a deep redish brown color and fall from the tree. Their limbs are a favored roosting spot for turkeys, and many birds and small mamals will feed on Cypress seeds. Wood from mature Bald Cypress trees is very valuable in the lumber industry due the wood's abliity to resist decay and it's long durability. Bald Cypress trees will do best in soils with a pH below 6.8 where they will receive full sun.
