Over the years we have noticed that a couple of the Sawtooths oaks we collect acorns from always start dropping their acorns about two weeks before the other Sawtooths around them and at other locations. We have labeled these trees "early drop" Sawtooths. Just like other Sawtooths, early drop Sawtooth oaks are quick growing and begin to produce acorns at an early age. They just begin dropping their acorns earlier in the fall. Planting a few of these with other Sawtooths can extend the amount of time Sawtooth acorns are available to wildlife.
Early Drop Sawtooth oaks can begin producing acorns when the trees are five to seven years old and usually produce heavy acorn crops every year. The acorns are about 1 inch long and drop between mid August and early October. The offspring we have grown as test trees have shown the early drop trait, but as these are open pollinated trees growing near other Sawtooths we can not guarantee that each individual tree will have the early drop trait.
Sawtooth oak trees will grow in a wide variety of soil types. However, for best results Sawtooths should be planted in areas with fertile, well-drained soils that receive full sunlight.
Our bare root trees are grown in air pruning raised beds that promote root growth. Prior to shipping, the bare roots are coated in root gel and packaged in peat moss or shreaded paper depending on the shipping destination requirements.
Our potted oaks are grown in 3" x 3" x 8" inch plant band pots. These pots allow the trees to establish a deep and spreading root system. The trees are transfered to biodegradable plant bags for shipping. The bags are designed be planted with the tree, reducing the loss of soil around the roots. We also offer in pot shipping for an additional charge to cover the replacement cost of the pot.
* Sawtooth oaks will not survive in sights that are flooded for more than 24 hours during the summer or in areas that are densely shaded.
Sawtooth oaks cannot be sold or shipped to Wisconsin and are considered non-hardy in North Dakota and most parts of Minnesota.
Our shipping period for Sawtooth oaks is December 15th through May 31th. Potted trees can be shipped year round but we advise that they not be shipped when there is risk of freeze damage to the trees during transport. See our Shipping page for more information.
