Northern Red oak trees are moderately fast growing red oaks that begin to produce acorns at about 20 years of age. In good conditions, Northern Red oaks can grow two feet or more per year for the first ten years. Acorn size ranges from 3/4 of an inch to 1 inch and fall leaf color varies from red to reddish brown. Northern Red oaks produce acorns every year with heavy crops beginning when the trees are about twenty-five years old. The acorns drop from late October through early December.
Northern Red oaks are hardy trees. They prefer moist well drained soils that are slightly acidic but can grow in wide variety of soil types. For best results, these trees should be planted in areas with good soil that receive full sunlight.
