Northern Red x Shumard hybrid oak trees are quick-growing red oaks that, unlike pure Northern Red or Shumard oaks, begin to produce acorns at a young age. As hybrids, the characteristics of individual trees vary. Acorn size ranges from 3/4 of an inch to over 1 inch and fall leaf color varies from red to brown. Additionally, some of the trees do not drop their leaves until late winter.
Northern Red x Shumard hybrid oaks can begin producing acorns when they are about seven years old. They produce acorns every year with heavy crops beginning when the trees are about ten years old. The acorns drop between mid October and early December.
These hybrid oaks are very hardy trees and have shown the ability grow in both upland and lowland environments. They grow well in both loamy and clay soils and several of our parent trees are in low areas that stay wet during the winter. For best results, these trees should be planted in areas with good soil that receive full sunlight.
Shumard oaks are considered non-hardy in North Dakota and most parts of Minnesota. As hybrids, Northern Red x Shumard oak trees may not be hardy in these areas either.
