Nuttall oak trees are quick-growing red oaks that can begin to produce acorns at a young age. Although Nuttalls are often overlooked during the tree selection process, they have several qualities that make them an excellent choice as part of a wildlife habitat improvement project.
Nuttall oaks that receive plenty of nutrients, sun, and water begin producing acorns at seven to ten years of age. They produce acorns every year and can begin producing heavy crops at ten to twelve years old. Nuttalls typically drop their acorns in the winter, between November and mid February, providing a late season food source after most other acorns have been consumed or have rotted.
Nuttall oaks are very hardy trees and will grow in many types of soil, including poorly drained areas. They can even tolerate flooding during the winter once they are well established. This makes Nuttalls an excellent choice for duck as well as deer. For best results, Nuttalls should be planted in areas with good soil that receive full sunlight.
