Pin Oak (Quercus palustris)

Pin oak limb with acornsPin oak treePin oak acorns

Pin oaks are a fast growing red oak that, under average conditions, begin to produce acorns at about 20 years of age. In excellent locations, they can begin producing acorns at younger ages. Acorns range in size from 1/2 to 3/4 of an inch. Pin oaks produce acorns every year with heavy crops beginning when the trees are about twenty-five years old. The acorns drop from late October through November and are consumed by deer, turkey, squirrels, ducks, and many other wildlife species. Fall leaf color varies from bronze to scarlet.

Pin oaks prefer acidic, loamy soils that are moist and well drained. However, they will also grow in sandy or clay soils and will even survive in wet locations. Pin oaks will even tolerate moderate flooding, making them an excellent choice for duck holes. For best results, these trees should be planted in areas with good soil that receive full sunlight.
