Southern Catalpa (Catalpa bignonioides)

Southern Catalpa Flowers.Southern Catalpa leaves and flowers

Southern Catalpa are fast-growing trees that have beautiful flowers and large heart-shaped leaves. Catalpas are the only host of the Catalpa Sphinx moth larva, known as the Catalpa worm. These worms are highly prized as bait by fisherman and as food for fish. Plant a few in your yard to have a ready supply of bait or on the edge of a lake to create a feeding hot spot for fish.

Southern Catalpas are very hardy trees and can adapt to many soil types. For best results though, Southern Catalpas should be planted areas with moist, well-drained soils that receive 2 to 6 hours of direct sunlight.
