Swamp Chestnut oak trees are large white oaks that usually begin producing acorns between 20 and 25 years of age. However, if they are planted in good soil and in full sunlight they grow very quickly and can begin to produce acorns at an earlier age. Their acorns are the largest of the white oaks and are loved by wildlife.
Swamp Chestnuts produce large acorn crops every 3 to 5 years with light to moderate crops in between. Acorn drop ranges from early November to early December providing a good late fall acorn source for wildlife.
Swamp Chestnut oaks are bottomland natives, but they will grow in a wide variety of soil types. Although they are named Swamp Chestnut, they will not survive flooding for more than a few days at a time. For best results and faster acorn production, Swamp Chestnut oaks should be planted in areas with fertile, well-drained soils that receive full sunlight. Swamp Chestnuts should not be mixed in plantings with other types of trees because when Swamp Chestnut oaks mature, they begin producing toxins that kill other trees growing in their root zone.
