We spotted this tree while collecting acorns several years ago and from a distance, thought it was another White oak. When we got to the tree we realized that the acorns didn't look like White oak acorns. The acorns were oval shaped and much longer than White oak acorns and the leaves were different. Since then we have decided that this tree, like a Bimundors oak, must be a cross between a White oak and an English oak.
The acorns from this White x English oak hybrid are 1 to 1-1/2 inches long and drop from mid October through November. As can be expected with hybrid oaks, the saplings we have grown have shown faster growth rates than pure White or English Oaks. Many of our test trees were over 6 feet tall by three years old. Hybrids typically produce acorns at a much younger ages than non-hybrid oaks, and as an added bouns, we expect these trees to have heavy acorn crops every year just like their parrent tree has done every year since we found it.
White oaks and English oaks prefer slightly acidic, deep soils that are moist and well drained but can tolerate drought and even occasionally wet locations. For best results, these trees should be planted in areas with good soil that receive full sunlight.
