White oaks produce one of the most desirable acorns to wildlife. Unfortunately, White oaks are slow growing and can take up to 40 years to begin producing acorns. However, in good soils and full sunlight they can begin producing acorns at 20 years of age. White oak acorns range in size from 1/2 to 1-1/4 inches and heavy crops are usually produced every 4 to 6 years. The acorns drop from mid October through November.
White oaks prefer slightly acidic, deep soils that are moist and well drained but can tolerate drought and even occasionally wet locations. For best results, these trees should be planted in areas with good soil that receive full sunlight.
